Here’s a look at my top pick of scripted TV shows with strong black leads. It is refreshing to see more and more shows with an African-American cast. I have watched every show on this list from comedy-drama and depending on your mood one of these shows will definitely spark your interest. Read below for my top 5 TV shows with a black leading character/s.
Story Line: Queen Sugar follows the lives of three siblings, who move to Louisiana to claim an inheritance from their recently departed father – an 800-acre sugarcane farm. This show has some interesting characters and some nail-biting drama! Filled with family feuds, political turmoil and racial tension – Queen Sugar is a show worth watching!
My Thoughts: There is a lot to love about this show rather its the cast, the closer look into a complicated dynamic family, the community racial tension or just how well written each episode is. The bottom line this is a must-watch show! In fact, my entire family is on a group chat weekly when this show is airing! One of us always identifies with someone on there! You can catch Queen Sugar on the Own Network!
Emotional, Funny, Dramatic, Great Cinematography!
Dear White People
Story Line: At a predominantly white Ivy League college, a group of black students navigates various forms of racial and other types of discrimination.
My Thoughts: A modern-day show that intellectually depicts how blacks can be stereotyped. Not only is this show entertaining but it debunks most racial stereotypes. This show is well executed and shines a lot on several injustices not just racial. Having gone to college at an HBCU and then transferring to a predominantly all-white school this show super resonated with me! It is funny yet inspiring and highlights serious racial and social dilemmas throughout all college campuses. Dear White People is a show that every person of color should tune into! You can catch all three seasons on Netflix.
Story Line: The story of a high school football player called Spencer, how he goes from being in a not so save situation to the fancy in Beverly Hills. A story about him and the people around him, his mom, brother, Coach Billy Baker, Jordan, Olivia, Asher, and others.
My Thoughts: All American is a mix of Beverly Hills 90210 meets Boyz N the Hood. The fact that this show is inspired by a true story garnered my attention from the jump. This show is more than just a “regular family drama” but it has several different layers to it. All American showcases not only the lavish living of the elite in LA but also those who live in south-central. It highlights the musical element as well as the gang life that is heavy in the LA streets. I suggest tuning in and catching some of what this show has to offer!
Story Line: Insecure follows the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman. Issa is a young woman in her thirties who navigates the single life with her friends.
My Thoughts: I don’t even know where to start lol. This show is PURE COMEDY! Having been a single woman in my thirties I can definently identify with the main character, a little too much! Insecure is a show about a woman trying to find her self, all while balancing a new career, love life and friends. This show is full of laughs with a heartfelt touch that you can’t help but wonder will Issa ever find love again.
Story Line: The unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, dark secrets and lies.
My Thoughts: Greenleaf is popppppin! If your like me and was raised in the church you have some inclination of what this show is about! A church full of sinners, manipulating each other for the pot of gold. My entire family is tuned in weekly for this messy tv drama.
These TV shows should be on your Must Watch List!
